Post-War Years

Since the end of the Second World War, many things have happened. I have been in and out of power, though it might be best to start at the very beginning of all of these happenings.

While I was in charge of the provisional government that got put in power immediately after the war ended, I withdrew when the Fourth Republic was declared. My reasons for this lie with my disagreement towards the constitution, which advocated a weak parliamentary system. With something like this in charge of France, there was no way that we would rise back to our status as a great power!

Luckily, the Algerian crisis caused the government leaders to turn to me for help in keeping the state together. I gladly accepted, creating a new constitution for my Fifth Republic. This new republic held yours truly as the president. In my position, I held the power to remove my country from NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization). I also bettered our position among the less developed countries of the time by granting Algeria their independence. Finally, I invested in the nuclear arms race, exploding our first nuclear bomb in 1960 and making France the third nuclear power in the world.

However, there were still problems, namely in the economy. Even though we quickly revitalized, nationalization of several traditional industries caused the government to lose money, and our cost of living to increase at a ridiculous rate. It was these problems that led to betrayal, of my people calling for my resignation! People do not always appreciate the help that others give them. I believe that I have done my share of work in strengthening France. Let others continue this job; I shall resign with dignity.
