I learned of this tragedy when I returned to Bordeaux on the 16th of June. I had been in London, England, on war business, when news of France's possible surrender reached my ears. I quickly telephoned Prime Minister Paul Reynard and told him of Great Britain's offer of a "Declaration of Union." What this meant was a complete unification of two great European powers, Great Britain and France, into one nation, with one army and one government. Of course, this has never been a desirable idea and never will be, but drastic times call for drastic measures. My call was a final act of desperation, beaten down by the French government.
Once back home, I found out that France had indeed waved their figurative white flag. I was not the only one appalled; there were other officers who joined me in rebelling against the new government. The day after, on June 17th, we fled France to the sanctuary of London, England. All we had in our possession was 100,000 francs from the former Prime Minister, Monsieur Reynard. We arrived here safely, but the thought of France's predicament makes me sick at heart.

Tomorrow, I shall begin a movement to show that not all of France has given in to German demands. The other officers who have escaped with me and the French troops stationed out-of-state will provide my manpower, and we will resist with all our might. Of course, I plan to work with the other Allied powers, but I will not let them hinder our own plans for French freedom just because they are undefeated and larger nations. Perhaps this shall make me unpopular amongst my allies, but there is no helping that. France will have its say and will rise from the mud to be great once more.
I already have a symbol for our resistance in mind:

For those who do not recognize it, this is the cross of Lorraine.
It is impossible for you to reclaim the French government after Hitler's victory. The Axis alliance has just proved how powerful we are by defeating the once, great French empire. After the victory of the Axis powers in World War II, France will be divided among myself and Hitler. The balance in Europe would no longer lean towards Great Britain and France, but instead to Germany and Italy.
ReplyDeleteAs a man of resistance against Hitler, I am truly sorry for France. I am a German, however, I oppose of Hitler’s action. I must say that your path to resistance is greatly appreciated and I fully support you tin showing the true independence of France. I warn you though that Hitler is a man full of clever strategy. Do not let him fool you and do not make a fool of yourself. I wish you the best of luck towards the French path towards freedom.

Claus von Stauffenberg
